Statistics prove that wearing a safety belt triples the chance of surviving a crash. The local sheriffs office is participating in the smart, safe and sober program because they are committed to preventing the tragic loss of life and devastating injuries that result from not using safety restraints.
This program was made possible by receiving a grant from the DMV. Sheriff Gary Settle applied for grant money in the amount of $2,000, which was approved and will allow the sheriffs office to participate in promoting highway safety. The entire amount will be utilized by deputies on their days off, to assist in increasing visibility and promoting highway safety in areas where citizens have expressed concerns. Because there is no money budgeted for overtime for the sheriffs office, the sheriff is constantly looking for outside funding to supplement the already busy schedule of the deputys.
