Consequently, a cardinal nest with five eggs may contain those with both her mate’s genes and those resulting from her daliance with another male. Daliance is an anthropomorphic term but seems appropriate in describing the female’s behavior.
Blood samples from adults and young, plus careful observation, proved several years ago that an older, experienced male Purple Martin will lure young, inexperienced females away from her mate and her nest cavity and copulate with her. These males have been around for a while and are adept at capturing food.
