She also recommends no television or music in the study space. While many young people insist they can’t study without music, they can’t learn to focus on their studies with divided attention.
“Organized space leads to organized thought,” she says.
But kids, don’t think she’s too tough on you. In that space, the kids should be allowed to create the study system that suits them.
Her oldest daughter had a form of dyslexia which made it difficult for her to study from books. She created her own method, involving hearing, discussion and then reading, which worked for her. She is now a Ph.D. in chemistry.
Her younger daughter was a very sequential learner, who liked each step of the education process to build on the one before. She is a reading specialist today.
And, by the way, moms, Kirk says her younger daughter didn’t keep a neat room. She didn’t worry about it.
“Everybody got to keep their rooms as they wanted them,” at least, until they attracted ants!
