The shapeliness of shrubs and trees can be accentuated by opening their center areas to sunlight. What about the lilacs (S. vulgaris) that are prone to mildew, as they struggle to bloom in this area? The quince (Chaenomeles speciosa “Candida” and X. superba “Spitfire Dwarf") must wait until next year for pruning, as their branches are already blanketed by white and redsalmon flowers, respectively.
Every morning my animals Isaac the Puli and Fig the cat accompany me along Naramata’s perimeter to “check our fences.” What if another wind storm takes out the fences and the cattle return? Should there be an auxiliary fence, wire or electric?
Why not festoon the cultivated acre with red Christmas velvet? Christmas ribbon ... it accents the leaf bud of the maple, though it looks odd flying about in the countryside. But already it had proven its worth, months before it usually appears on wreaths and packages.
And .after all, spring chores will lead to holiday pleasures, in the nurturing cycle of gardening.
