The designated sign-up centers are: Mountainside Market, Sperryville, Rae and Brian Ross, 987-9100; Dennis Store, Scrabble, Robert and Doris Dennis, 987-8116; Hackley’s Store, Amissville, Ron and Jan Makela, 937-5373; Laurel Mills Store, Laurel Mills/Castleton, Mary Frances Fannon, 937-3015; and Williams’ Store, Chester Gap, Buck and Marilyn Williams, 636-2627. People register their road pick-up site(s) and designated organizations, and are given official VDOT extra-strength orange bags. Tracking cards will be kept on each person or group and will include all pertinent information to include the date and location of pick-up, bag count, recipient organization.
Tracking cards will be continuously updated throughout the contest and submitted to Baumgardner’s Law Office at the end of the designated time period so everyone can get their money. The committee hopes some people will choose to donate all the funds toward worthy causes or organizations.Additionally prizes will be awarded for total number of bags picked up as follows: first place, $300, second place, $200 and third place, $100.
Harris said he hopes this will inspire people to pick up roads on a regular basis and cautions individuals and teams to be careful when picking up trash.
