mist them regularly, but since they are prone to damping off, one has to be very careful. Then the book offers a possible solution: “Seedlings grown in vermiculite only will be less prone to damping off.” Mine are sitting on humid, damp vermiculite, and the tray is sitting over a heating mat to keep the soil warm.
All told, when you count up the amount of money I’ve spent on the light cart, heating mat and seeds — not counting the time expended — I’d have been better off if I had just bought the seedlings from the company and been done with it. But that misses the point of gardening in the first place, doesn’t it?
Gardening is an activity that one engages in to create something where there was nothing — beauty in a world desperate for it.
It has been my experience that people who are always adding up the cost of things end up being the kind of people who know the price of everything and the value of nothing.
