He searched the area at that time but did not purchase a home here until he and his daughter bought a home in Harris Hollow in 1980. He sold it after a few years when his father urged him to take over his factory in New York. After 12 years he sold that business.
For a year Ochs worked planning the development for a 1200-acre resort in the Turks and Caicos Islands near the Bahamas. He finished in the fall of 1996 , moved back to Washington, D.C. and began writing a novel. Looking for a place to write he returned to Rappahannock and rented a small log cabin.
