Good news
School board budget will not
require increase for operational funds
On Monday, April 27, the board of supervisors
will hold a public hearing at 7:30 p.m. in the
RCHS auditorium, to discuss the school board proposal for the FY98-99 budget, and on May 4, the supervisors will meet at the courthouse in Washington to consider adoption of the budget.
With nearly $290,000 available from the state due to a change in the composite index, and increases expected in federal funds of about 13 percent, Dr. David Gangel, superintendent, thinks all operational funds, to include debt service, will be included without the need to increase local taxes. This is certainly good news. The school board and Dr. Gangel are to be commended for their hard work.
Some capital needs for school renovations and an architectural engineering study for the high school will require funding, most likely out of bond proceeds or tax increases. The school board is encouraging residents to tour the schools in order to better understand the issues facing the board and the county. A good idea.
