Most branches have a visible ridge of a bark where they attach to the trunk. This ridge is called the branch collar and it should be left when the branch is removed. It will help the wound heal. Pruning flush with the trunk removes the collar and slows down healing. Properly pruned trees do not require paints on the pruning cuts, in fact, research indicates they can inhibit healing.
Landscape trees are valuable, sometimes priceless additions to landscapes. If they need work, it is worth the price to hire a professional certified arborist. There are many people who do tree work, but most are not certified arborists. Yellow page advertisements under tree work will identify companies with certified arborists on staff and they will be members of state and national professional associations.
Three companies that advertise “topping” as a service should be avoided. They may be OK for taking down the dead tree in the back forty, but not for working on the 200 year old oak in the front yard.
