How was this proved? All three adults were captured in mist nets, banded, and a tiny drop of blood was taken from each. All donated a drop of blood to the cause of the science of bluebird breeding behavior. The birds were no more harmed by the donation than we are when we give a drop or two of blood.
Just before the five young left the nest box, each was subjected to the same blood donation procedure. With DNA testing, it was proved that three were offspring of female B and two were the offspring of the interloping lady.
