and perseverance will yield great results as you look for ways to improve your garden. Want to build a wall around your peonies? If you’ll drive around construction sites, sooner or later you’ll find a builder who’s very happy for you to haul away the rocks that other homeowners think they don’t want, and you can have a nice little wall for nothing save your effort.
Plants too.
My former neighbor and still close gardening friend Roberta Wagner gave me three Giant grocery bags full of bearded iris corms that she had thinned out of Meade Palmer’s garden. These are no-brainer plants. Put them on top of some decent dirt, push them into the ground, don’t water them too much (once a week unless it rains), and let them bake in the Virginia sun. Piece of cake. And drop-dead gorgeous when they bloom in late spring.

First, magic lilies, or naked ladies as they’re sometimes called. They’re all over Warrenton, and like any perennial they need to be thinned out about every two years.
You have to have these, especially if you have kids. Sometime around July or August, a stem that looks like a piece of asparagus will shoot up, so quickly that if you have a few hours to spend you literally can watch it grow.
