freebie: a book entitled “Seed Starter: A Growing Guide to Starting Flower, Vegetable and Herb Seeds Indoors and Outdoors.” Do you call that coincidental? I don’t.

I read the book from cover to cover, with particular attention devoted to the section on impatiens. Quite frankly, it’s a terrific book. The opening chapter tells the story of a seed. And which seed do they choose? An African Queen impatiens seed. Does anyone else see the hand of fate moving into my little endeavor?

Then I got to page 40, and the book moved to trouble-shooting seeds that have germinated. The first subject was “Damping Off,” and as I read it, I felt the memory of last year’s failure return like an ice pick to the brain.
