Prof says AIDS no threat
RICHMOND — Henrico County school officials should not bar a 5-year-old afflicted with AIDS from attending public school, a Medical College of Virginia professor said Friday.
“There is no absolute evidence that AIDS is transmitted child to child,” said Dr. Lisa Kaplowitz.
Studies of acquired immune deficiency victims who have maintained casual contact with other family members in close living situations have proved the low risk of transmission other than from the mother’s womb before birth or through blood transfusions, she said.
Henrico School Superintendent William C. Bosher Jr. said the child will not be allowed to return to Laburnum Elementary School.
Hennco school officials said the kindergarten pupil was diagnosed as having the infectious and so far incurable disease Oct. 16.
The confirmed diagnosis of AIDS is the first in the Hennco public schools and, according to a spokesman for the Virginia Department of Education, the first confirmed case in the state.
