Exton was graduated from the Schiller University in Heidelberg, Germany; he traveled throughout Europe singing and playing guitar in nightclubs. He performed in Washington area clubs such as the Cellar Door, the Birchmere and the old Warehouse in Alexandria.
In 1978, using first-hand ac-^' counts from Cambodia refugees, Exton wrote amd recorded the song, “The Bloody Boys of Phnom Penh,” an indictment of the Pol Pot regime.
The song was used to draw congressional and public attention to the Cambodian crisis during a time when entrance into the country was impossible.
In 1981, Exton called on Kleitz, his long-time friend, to help with the project that ended with “Milestones into Headstones.”
