Bad bet

The day after physical exertion, even two days after, our bodies remind us who’s really in charge and make us pay for all that silly running around we foolishly thought we could maintain.
I watched about three minutes of the New York City Marathon on Sunday morning — the morning after the three games we played — and felt bad. Real bad. Watching those 18,000 or so runners sweat and toil through the streets of New York only made me feel worse. (I get a kick out of hearing the television announcer say something about the field running through the Bronx. Unless I’m in a locked car, that’s the only way I’m going through the Bronx.)
The in-house softball tournament was supposed to be big stuff. This company has about four basic divisions large enough to field a softball team, the Rappahannock News not included. We barely have enough employees to field a basketball team, let alone finding 10 players to occupy a softball diamond. We’re combined with the staff from the Fauquier Democrat. We get that a lot around here.
