strategists agree fewer voters will J show up at the polls. Under these circumstances its effect could be a “wash” or it could marginally help the Democrats.
Thus, the pre-election polls notwithstanding, there are still enough variables out there to make this anybody’s election year.
What it will almost certainly come down to is a knockdown and dragout battle by party workers to haul the votes, some of them kicking and screaming, to the polls on Election Day.
Indeed, for the Democrats, it is the possible overconfidence on the part of their planners and leaders, as ^ well as voter apathy in the light of their glowing survey results, which could do them in. Any letup in their e efforts before the polls actually close on Nov. 5 could hand the elections to the GOP.
And, for the Republicans, the possibility of such a letup may be their best chance of finally turning the figures around in the only poll which really counts.
But make no mistake. Apathy has stalked this election from the beginning, and stalks it still. The party which does the better job of overcoming it by effective precinct work on Election Day will likely claim the Governor’s Mansion and pick up the other statewide marbles.
