Not only was Gov. Charles

Robb extremely popular as the Democratic gubernatorial nominee, but the the Republican ticket was hurt by conflict-of-interest charges against former state Sen. Nathan H. Miller, the GOP candidate for lieutenant governor in 1981.

Without those charges, Durrette said, “I think he might have won and I would have won.”

Durrette added, “I am stronger in the polls now than any of my predecessors have been ... So I think all of this means I have an excellent chance of winning.”

One issue that the two have differed over has been education and how to pay for it. Durrette says it isn’t enough to spend money, vas Baliles has suggested, but how the money is spent.
