a Democratic sweep in 1981. Before that, the Democrats had won only two races for attorney general and two for lieutenant governor, one with Mr. Robb, since 1966.
Since 1981, Democrats have lost one presidential and two Senate races in Virginia.
“Virginia has been the Republicans’ bulkhead state in the South. They want very much to get it back,” said Larry Sabato, a government professor at the University of Virginia.
“The Democrats winning at the state level will say something about Robb’s moderate push, if anybody is looking. It certainly would reflect badly on Robb if they lost. He is a leader of the new moderate Democrats.”
As one of only two states with gubernatorial races this year —- and there is little competition in New Jersey — some consider Virginia a testing ground for the national parties.
The Republicans contend their opponents are not as conservative as they claim and therefore out of step with Virginia. The Democrats have promoted a philosophy of fiscal conservatism coupled with a more moderate stance on social issues.
Still, there are few issues on which Mr. Durrette and Mr. Baliles disagree. >
And in recent weeks, Mr. Durrette has tried to fire up a lackluster campaign with attempts to brand Mr. Baliles as a tax-raiser.
