Jerry Baliles has pledged his efforts to agribusiness through initiatives for marketing, financing and research to benefit Virginia’s farmers.
In remarks to a breakfast meeting of the Friends of Industry of Agriculture, Baliles recognized that the forest industry is a major force within an agricultural economy and noted that successful reforestation and timber management rpresented a significant employment source. This is a major industry employer in the 7th District.
Calling agriculture the most “effective and efficient industry in Virginia,” Baliles stressed that, “20 percent of the Commonwealth’s workers derive their livelihood from agriculture.”
In looking at agriculture in the 7th District he noted the diversity which existed from dairy farming to apple orchards, from beef farming to poultry interests, from hog operations to grain farming. The focus on the quality of agriculture needs to be maintained, and Baliles indicated that he was committed to this effort.
He urged the increase in communication between the agricultural community and state government, especially with the office of the Governor.
