Following a timeout, Rappahannock’s all-district candidate Karen Jordan, who is the team’s leading scorer with a 24 points-per-game average, took the ball end-to-end to cut the lead to one point with four seconds left.
Rappahannock failed to call time out and the clock expired.
"111 take some of the blame (for not calling timeout)," Voorhees said. "But there’s still no way you should lose when you win the first game by 20 points.”
The loss. Voorhees said, was determined long before the final four seconds of the game.
“Our bad passes and impatience lost us the ball many, many times,” Voorhees said.
Rappahannock needed a win over visiting Brentsville Tuesday and a Page County loss to George Mason to finish in fifth place and face Brentsville in the opening round of the Bull Run District tournament, which is to start Tuesday.
Rappahannock lost to Brentsville earlier in the season, 4S-43 on the road where “we blew it,” according to the coach.
Heading into the final district game, Strasburg and Clarke County were tied for first place with 12-1 records and were to square off Tuesday to determine the district champion. George Mason (9-4) will finish third and Brentsville (7-b) is fourth. In the eight-team tournament format, the No. 1 seed plays No. b, No. 2 plays No. 7, No. 3 plays No. 6 and the Nos. 4 and 5 seeds play one another.
Voorhees said he would prefer playing Brentsville in the first round in Nokesville, rather than play George Mason in Falls Church.
The last time Rappahannock played at George Mason, three different Panthers were hit with technical fouls and Voorhees thought the Mustangs were treated with a bit of home-cooking from the game officials.
“I would prefer playing Brentsville because of that,” Voorhees said.
