Baliles has seized the education issue in attacking Durrette. Baliles says he himself supports full-funding of the state Standards of Quality for education. The state has never fully paid its share, and Baliles says he supports Robb’s proposal to fully fund them during the next budget biennium.

That could cost an additional $500 million, according to some estimates, and would include raising teachers’ salaries to the national average.

Baliles has also charged that Durrette doesn’t support full funding, and that Durrette has called education “just another line item in the budget.”
