When election day finally rolls around, election officials are on the job early — most by 5:15 a.m. The polls open at 6 a.m. and remain open until 7 p.m. Anyone who is in line to vote by 7 p.m. is allowed to vote.
Each precinct has a polling place where voters who live within the boundaries of that precinct may go to vote. Each voter who enters the polling place is checked to make sure he or she is registered to vote at that precinct.
After verification, the voter either marks his choice on a paper ballot or votes on a voting machine. Working models of voting machines are set up at each precinct to familiarize first-time voters with the machine. Sample paper ballots also must be on display.
