ucational guidelines which each school system must follow. The state provides only a portion of the money needed to pay for programs required by the standards. Localities must pick up the remainder of the tab.
“I think certainly the state will go higher,” Mr. Guest said of the state’s share of the cost of implementing the standards. “Whether they’ll go to the full extent. . . I just don’t know.”
Mr. Guest said he wants to see the latest state revenue projections, due out in December, before he decides how he will vote on that issue.
Education will have to compete with corrections and other needs for the extra money, he added.
Mr. Guest said it is unlikely there will be a nugor tax increase to provide additional funds. However, he has heard “rumbling” that there may be a push either to delete the tax exemption for gasohol or to increase the tax on gasoline by a penny or two.
Water will be the other major issue during the Assembly session, said the delegate.
