Federal, state and county candidates normally are chosen during a November election, which is held the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November. Town officials normally are chosen during elections held the first Tuesday in May.
Often, if a political party has more than one person interested in a certain office, the party will hold a “primary” election. Even though the Democrats may be having a primary, anyone — including an avowed Republican — can participate in the election. In the event both parties conduct primaries, voters can only participate in one primary. , The winner becomes that party’s candidate in the November election. State and county primaries are held the second Tuesday in June; town and city primaries the first Tuesday in March.
Special elections can be held at any time to fill an unexpired term. This is sometimes done if the incumbent (the person holding that office) dies or resigns.
