Despite indications that Democrats lead statewide, the poll in most cases favored Republicans in this region of Virginia.
While Mr. Baliles’ support statewide has increased 7 points to 48 percent since September, the poll gave Mr. Durrette the lead:
• 49 percent to 35 percent in the Central Piedmont region (including Fauquier, Rappahannock, Culpeper and Stafford counties).
• 45 to 42 in Northern Virginia (including Loudoun, Prince William and Fairfax counties).
• 50 to 38 in the Shenandoah region (including Clarke, Warren and Frederick counties).
Statewide, the latest poll results are consistent with all others publicized. Previous Mason-Dixon polls favored Mr. Baliles over Mr. Durrette, 40-39 in June, 41-39 in July and 41-35 in September.
The latest poll indicates Mr. Baliles leads among women (53-35) and blacks (76-10), while Mr. Durrette leads among men (43-42) and whites (45-41).
