Several weeks ago, Godwin criticized Wilder for proposing in 1970 that the state song, Carry Me Back to Old Virginia, be dropped because of its references to “massa” and “darky.”

GOP leaders are reportedly concerned that Godwin and elements of the old Byrd Machine are perceived to be excercising undue influence over the Republican ticket.
