An effort is being made in Virginia to get a new state law written that would grant all religions exemption from zoning laws. It seems to me that this would be the best way to go. As John Thebum, a Christian activist who is behind'the move, says: “I think you are better off tolerating a certain amount of abuse from problem cases and having a free society than throwing (other religions) out of a community because of a few problem cases. ”
It might be remembered also that the U.S. Constitution places a higher value on religious rights, which cannot be abridged, than it does upon property rights, which can be denied by due process of law.
I only hope that the Rappahannock pastors who agreed to tire compromise solution will change their position radically and follow Jesus’ instructions to keep the things of God separate from the things of government, and as pastors — leaders of flocks — free themselves from all entanglements ith politics.
I hope a w .. that, cy and their congregations, as individual citizens, will get behind this needed law and help get it passed.
