Four years later, Mills E. Godwin Jr., a Byrd Democrat who served as governor from 1965 to 69 after having been elected by a coalition of national Democrats, including blacks, laborers and some Byrd Democrats, switched parties and was elected governor as a Republican, defeating liberal-populist Henry Howell.
