“The thing about the Balileses is that they could beanybody," Mrs. Macaulay says. Both were and are down-to-Earth, unassuming people, she added.
The Balileses and their two children, Laura, 16, and Jonathan, 14, used to borrow the Macaulay's tent for annual camping trips, and her husband and Baliles used to sit around the house on weekends, drinking beer and plotting strategy for intraparty battles, Mrs. Macaulay recalls. Attorney General* Ed Harrell, a friend and confidant, believes that Baliles was determined to run for attorney general even before the race against Carwile. “Somewhere in his formative years, he made a decision about what he was going to be,” Harrell argues. “I don’t think that ever completely leaves his consciousness.” By virtue of his experience as an assistant to Miller, Baliles had extensive contacts in state government and knowledge about its operations.
