Chichester — like his runningmates Durrette and attorney general candidate W.R. “Buster” O’Brien — also opposes collective bargaining for public employees. Chichester insists his opponent supports collective bargaining; Wilder vehemently denies the charge.

Chichester, who has served seven years in the Senate, was until the early 1970s a lifelong Democrat. The change in party affiliation occurred gradually, a change that was precipitated by his unsuccessful bid to to defeat House of Delegates member George C. Rawlings Jr. in 1969.
