“The only thing a candidate can do or that a governor can do at this time is to say we have to have more money for roads, and I am committed to doing that,” Durrette said.
He said he’d rather develop a “consensus” with legislators after the election. “In a campaign, as soon as you put out one idea, you’re going to have somebody shooting at it.”
Acknowledging that “it is politically risky” to support a specific method in the campaign, Durrette added that “more important than that it probably prejudices debate” on the issue, and could jeopardize efforts to reach a consensus.
“A govtrnor has to be in a position to bring it all together,” he said.
