Durrette says the educational system in Virginia is generally better than average, but that better teachers need to be attracted. One way to do that is through a merit pay system, something Baliles opposes.
More and more teachers are supporting the idea, he says, particularly good ones who left the profession because they were doing a better job but weren’t getting paid any more than mediocre teachers.
“It’s not how much we pay, but how we pay it,” he said. “1 think if we’re going to get the best and the brightest we’ve got to let them excel, because they’re . . . motivated to excel and they want to be rewarded financially for that success.”
