More than anything else at the time, that narrow and frustrating loss to Rawlings nudged Chichester toward the Republican Party. Had he won, Chichester might still be a Democrat.

But he lost. And the party’s liberal faction at the state and national level began to assert itself. In the late and early 1970s, Rawlings and other liberals took control of the General Assembly and in 1972, George McGovern was the Democratic presidential candidate.

Given the circumstances, Chichester quietly switched parties. In explaining the move, he said: “I didn’t leave the Democratic Party, the party left me” because of its liberal tendencies. “The
