The issues that have gained the most attention in the race have been transportation and education. Neither Baliles nor Durrette has committed to a specific plan for raising new revenue for roads, although, not surprisingly, both say they are committed to doing something about the problem.
Both have been evasive in interviews, declining to state specific proposals, such as bond issues or gasoline tax increases, instead vowing to work behind the scenes with the state legislature during the 1986 session.
