Wilder, the first black representing a major party to run for statewide office since Reconstruction, says he’s hardly a liberal on most issues because the label connotates “extremist,” which is contrary to his reputation as a “mainstream” politician.

“I have the reputation of being a consensus and coalition builder” in the Senate, noting such a role would be impossible for a liberal who would be on the fringes of mainstream thinking.
