Fall activities now are underway at Shenandoah National Park and will continue through the last weekend in October, according to Park Naturalist Dennis Carter.
Visitor centers at Dickey Ridge and Big Meadows are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with extended hours on weekends. A new information station near the Panorama Gift Shop also is open weekends.
Evening slide programs begin at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at Mathews Arm Campground, Skyland and Big Meadows. A conducted hike or other activity is scheduled daily at Big Meadows, with topics to include: “Meadow Heritage,” ‘Trees,” “Bear Essentials,” and ‘Day’s End.”

Mr. Carter reports fall color is usually at its best from October 12 to 30, depending on the elevation. Additional natural attractions include the migration of hawks and monarch butterflies along the Blue Ridge, he adds.
