“UVa felt that there was a need for the helicopter service since a prolonged time to get to a hospital increases the hospital stay for the patient,” said Phillip Mortensen, the director of Pegasus. The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for critically ill or injured patients.
“Primarily we hope that the seminars will be informative, and will teach the rescue squad personnel how to gain access to the helicopter, what the needs are for a landing site, patient criteria and helicopter safety,” Mortensen said.
Pegasus can respond to emergencies within a 70-mile radius, and will make inter-hospital transports throughout the state and surrounding regions.
