The race for the leading jockey is missing one of its star performers this year. An injury has forced John Cushman,, a 28-year-old native of Camden, S. C., to retire from steeplechase racing after being the leading jump rider in the country for the past four years.
While exercising a two-year-old runner at the Camden Training Center, Mr. Cushman was thrown, severing ligaments in his left leg. Surgery on the leg in February failed to fully repair the damage and, according to the rider, the leg is not
