Thirty-Plus Gather At Library
More than 30 people gathered at the Rappahannock County Library September 17 to hear Dr. Jan Cohn discuss Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, by Anne Tyler. Dr. Cohn chain the English department at George Mason University.
The lecture/diacuasion was part of a aeries sponsored by The Friends of the Rappahannock County Public Library. Hie aeries is entitled, “The Ties That Bind - Relationships in Fiction-The Individual and Communities.”
“Dr. Cohn’s analysis of the novel and its characters was careftil, precise and full of insight. When she had finished, the audience joined her in lively...discussion,” noted Lee Bird of Washington.
Prior to Dr. Cohn’s presentation, members of the Rappahannock Players read selections from the novel, which Dr. Cohn had selected to illustrate certain points.
The lecture-discussion series is fended in part by a grant from the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy. Three more segments of the series are scheduled: The next will take place Tuesday, September 25.
Guest lecturer for next Tuesday’s event is Professor Calvin Forbes of the Howard University English Department. Mr. Forbes will discuss The Color Purple, by Alice Walker and the Rappahannock Players again will provide dramatic readings.
The lecture/discussion series begins at 7:30 p.m., and is open to the public. The evening begins earlier for those interested, with dinner at Brambles Resturant at 6 p.m. To make reservations for dinner, call 6753490.
