Warner, to the surprise of no one, came off as the experienced political professional that he is. As he has always done on the political stump, he reminded his audience of his experience as a naval enlisted man, a Marine officer and finally as secretary of the navy.

And of course, he looked like a courtly southern senator right out of central casting.

Media coverage of the event was spotty. It took place in Virginia Beach and was broadcast on public television stations only in the Tidewater and Northern Virginia areas. A Harrisonburg commercial television station which aired it was plagued with transmission problems. It was broadcast statewide on radio by the Virginia News Network. The event was sponsored by the League of Women Voters. ABC reporter Ann Compton served as moderator and three newsmen made up the panel.

The whole affair was as staid and genteel as an 18th century minuet. The questions.served up by the panel were good ones, but they were fairly predictable. They dealt with the kinds of things on which the candidates, in preparing for the evening,
