Parking and attendance at F oxfield have grown yearly, with a strong contingent always coming from the nearby University of Virginia. Crowds at the meet often average 14,000 and sometimes grow to 19,000, making it one of the largest attended spectator events in the state.

This year six races are on the schedule including the featured $15,000 American Grand National. Founded more than 100 years ago, this 2Vi-mile hurdle race is one of the oldest in the country. It is also the first leg in steeplechasing’s Triple Crown which William L. Pape’s Flatterer won last year, becoming the first horse ever to win the elusive triple. The other two jewels of the crown are the Temple Gwathmey in Belmont, N. Y., and the Colonial Cup in Camden, S. C.
