Molds can become destructive in the home if allowed to contaminate and grow on materials.
Molds, mildews and mushrooms are fungi that can affect living things in many different ways. Fungi are small, inconspicuous plants that are unable to manufacture their own food so they must obtain essential nutrients by the decomposition of natural and synthetic products.
Manufactured products of all kinds are subject to attack by fungi. Fungi decay wood, cloth, fabrics, twine, electrical insulation, leather, food products of all sorts and a variety of other materials.
High moisture, warm temperatures and low light intensity favor mold growth. Usually household articles become moldy or mildewed because they are stored wet, stored in a closed space with no ventilation or stored uncleaned or unprotected so the mold starts growing on spilled foods, greases or oils.
There are two ways plant and processed goods are protected from fungus attack-being covered or impregnated with chemicals toxic to fungi.
