Steeplechasing is an exciting spectator sport because of its fast pace and the inherent thrills and danger that come with the jumps and the knowledge that 1,000pound animals born to run are being controlled by men or women weighing at most 150 pounds.
Besides the racing, however, steeplechasing is also very popular because of what goes on between races. For some people this is the most important thing about a steeplechase and they may be lucky to see one race the whole afternoon.
The sport is unique in this respect because of the intense excitement during the races followed by the opportunity to relax and party in between in a beautiful country setting. It is no wonder that steeplechasing is the largest spectator event in the Old Dominion, often drawing crowds from 5,000 to 20,000 depending on the location and size of the meet.
