When handling large animals such as cattle, horses and even hogs, it is easy to get stepped on, or pushed. Protective shoes and hats could prevent injury. V
A safety or hard hat is designed to protect the head from impact and flying or falling objects. Another type of hat is a bump cap, which offers less protection than the hard hat but helps protect against minor scrapes.
When wearing a hard hat or bump cap on the job, be sure the headband is tight enough so that the hat or cap stays on when bending over.
The hazardous chemicals that farmers use come with information about the protective clothing necessary when handling the chemicals. Never take short-cuts on protective clothing, said Hetzel.
“Get a supply of the personal protective gear and make sure everyone working on the farm knows when and how to use it,” said Hetzel.
