Summer steeplechasing commenced just 10 days after the end of the spring circuit at Fair Hill. After the maiden ’chase was cancelled on June 18 at Monmouth Park, the allowance horses had their shot the following day when a full field of 12 non-winners of two races stepped out on the inner turf track at the Oceanport, N. J-, facility. The ensuing race was not exactly a showplace for the sport, as five starters failed to finish and one had to jump that great fence in the sky.
Jerry Fishback aboard Bill Farish’s Pantanillo kept his cool, avoiding fallen riders to prevail by four lengths over Jimmy Day and Mi Caballo at the end of the 214-mile route. Trouble began early w hen JeffTeter and Flasher caught a beacon, injuring Teter’s knee. Bemie Houghton on Shaban lost an iron, shook the other off but finished in third regardless.
