Fairfax Hunt Races
The fall steeplechase season in Virginia begins with the 27th annual Fairfax Races at the Belmont Plantation near Leesburg on Saturday, Sept. 22.
When the Fairfax Hunt first began its races the meet was held at Reston, on a site where a large high school now stands.
‘The hunt used to give a substantial horse show, but we found there was more and more interest in point-to-point and steeplechase racing than shows,” explained Randolph Rouse, Master of Fox Hounds (MFH) of the Fairfax Hunt and the chairman of the meet since its beginning. “So, we gave up our class ‘A’ horse show and put on a race meet. William duPont suggested the course layout for us.”
When Reston started to develop the Fairfax races had to move and they went to Middleburg for several years.
All hunts want their race meets to be within their own territories and the hunt searched for somewhere in Fairfax to put mi a meet.
