From 1947 until 1979 he was a firefighter, but now Russell Pullen says he is the kind that “sits in the living room and listens to the calls on the monitor.”
His retirement was not a matter of choice. In the latter part of 1978, Pullen had a slight stroke that ended a firefighting career that had lasted more than three decades.
Pullen became a fireman in Falls Church, Va. after he got out of the Army. “At the time, I had just gotten out of the service, and I knew some people in the fire department,” Pullen said. “I joined as a volunteer, but I didn’t like the inside work; I liked the outside work.”
When he was offered a paid position in 1948, Pullen said yes and began his career. For 17 years, Pullen drove the ambulance in Falls Church. “I loved my work, and helping people,” said Pullen. “I delivered many a baby when I was driving that ambulance.”
Pullen was bom in Rappahannock County near Viewtown. In 1966, Pullen and his wife, Hazel, bought some land in Amissville and built a house. Mrs. Pullen was a nurse in Falls Church, and the couple also
