“Jonathan Sheppard’s performance at Saratoga this year was nothing short of phenomenal,” Mr. Gallo said. “A total of 1190,000 in purses was awarded there for jump races and he won $114,000 of it! His horses also won three races on the flat, making him the leading trainer at the meet. Now he is way ahead in terms of money won.”
Mr. Sheppard, who is originally from Newmarket, Engluid, has been training horses for 21 years. The horses he trains regularly account for 20 to 26 percent of all steeplechase purses in this country.
Besides Flatterer, Mr. Sheppard also trains Double Reefed and Gateshead for George Strawbridge’s Augustin Stables, Skin The Cat for William S. Farish and his own horse, Eremite. All of these horses are currently in the top 10 for money won
