“I developed an ulcer on the fourth toe of my left foot, and my toe was taken off at Martinsburg Veterans Hospital,” Pullen said. “Then I developed an infection in the bottom of my foot, and I had treatments and was released in the middle of June.” Pullen had gone into the hospital in March of this year.
Pullen had another hospital stay in August. MI went into Front Royal Hospital on August 13th for pneumonia until the 22nd,” said Pullen. “They told me then that there might be a chance that I could lose my left leg unless the infection is stopped. ”
Pullen returned to the doctor on September 18, and the doctor found that his leg was better. “Through all of the problems, I’Ve rtever really felt bad,” he said.
“I think I’m doing very well now, considering everything I’ve been through,” Pullen said. “I have no trouble walking, and at least I’m back to wearing shoes now.”
He enjoys walking around his land where he has two horses, a filly, a pony, two dogs and two ducks. Every afternoon, he goes out in his backyard and calls his ducks. “I yell ‘come on quack-quacks’, and they come back to their shed,” said Pullen.
Pullen misses the life of a fireman, though. “I have one of the radios here in the house. I lay there and cry sometimes because I can’t answer the calls.”
