Agriculture vies with mining and construction work for the unenviable position of most deaths, said Glen H. Hetzel, Virginia Tech Extension agricultural engineer.
Nationally, the rate of deaths in agriculture occupations is 63.8 per 100,000 individuals working. Of those, 34.5 are killed in motor vehicle accidents such as driving to a dealer for a repair part, while 20.7 fatalities occur when working.
